Dynamic Optimization of Bioreactors: a Review

چکیده
SUMMARY Model based optimization can be successfully used to improve the design and operation of bioreactors. In this contribution, we present a review of this area, especially focusing on the dynamic optimization of fed-batch bioreactors, a class of problems which has attracted (and continues to receive) huge attention. Both classical and more novel approaches, like those using bio-inspired optimization methods, are discussed. Finally, future research trends and needs are outlined.

Bone Tissue Engineering: a Mini-Review
Despite advances in bone tissue engineering, auto grafts from intra-oral or extra-oral donor sites are still the gold standard for treatment of large craniomaxillofacial defects. Biomaterial development, application of growth factor, and stem cells, open new gateway to bone regeneration studies, but real translation from bench to bedside have not yet happened. In this review article, a number o...
متن کاملOptimal Control of Fedbatch Bioreactors by Iterative Dynamic Programming
Obtaining the optimal control policy of a fedbatch bioreactor is a difficult task due to the low sensitivity of the feed rate on the objective function. In this work, iterative dynamic programming was selected for identification of optimal control policies of two fedbatch bioreactors for citric acid production. In the first application the raw material is molasses, and in the second is whey. Th...
متن کاملBioreactor-based bone tissue engineering: the influence of dynamic flow on osteoblast phenotypic expression and matrix mineralization.
An important issue in tissue engineering concerns the possibility of limited tissue ingrowth in tissue-engineered constructs because of insufficient nutrient transport. We report a dynamic flow culture system using high-aspect-ratio vessel rotating bioreactors and 3D scaffolds for culturing rat calvarial osteoblast cells. 3D scaffolds were designed by mixing lighter-than-water (density, <1g/ml)...
متن کاملCombination of Electrochemical Processes with Membrane Bioreactors for Wastewater Treatment and Fouling Control: A Review
This paper provides a critical review about the integration of electrochemical processes into membrane bioreactors (MBR) in order to understand the influence of these processes on wastewater treatment performance and membrane fouling control. The integration can be realized either in an internal or an external configuration. Electrically enhanced membrane bioreactors or electro membrane bioreac...
